has said he is ‘a romantic’ and doesn’t regret any of his five marriages, saying he’d ‘live it all again’.
The star, 63, has made quite the habit of matrimony over the years, but was in a game mood to talk about it recently, ahead of his appearance in .
In the upcoming programme, written by Bafta-winning Stefan Golaszewski, Bean portrays Ian, with Nicola Walker starring as his on-screen wife of 30 years, Emma.
And yes, the irony is not lost on the actor.
‘I’ve obviously experienced more marriages than most people,’ he agreed in a new interview.
‘I suppose there is that romantic in me, otherwise I wouldn’t keep doing it. But I don’t regret anything. I’d live it all again.’
Sean also pointed out while in conversation with that his because he has had five wives over 40 years, rather than five girlfriends.
The actor reasoned that ‘it’s not as though I’ve been gallivanting around’.
‘I suppose I could have seen how things developed, got to know them better before taking the plunge,’ he told the publication. ‘But I didn’t because I felt strongly about all these women, otherwise I wouldn’t have married them.’
The Lord of the Rings star first tied the knot with his childhood sweetheart, hairdresser Debra James, in 1981 at the age of just 21.
They were married for eight years, before divorcing in 1988, with Sean going on to next wed Bread and Coronation Street star Melanie Hill in 1990, who he had met while studying at RADA.
They had two daughters together, Lorna and Molly, before separating and divorcing in 1997.
The actor’s third wife was his Sharpe co-star Abigail Cruttenden, with the pair married for three years and welcoming daughter Evie together in 1998.
The fourth time down the aisle for Sean was with Georgina Sutcliffe in 2008, after they met a bar in 2003, but the marriage lasted just two years, with .
Of late, he appears settled with fifth wife, American Ashley Moore, after they married in 2017.
Bean also insisted he had felt that each time he married that it would be ‘forever’, saying: ‘It’s not something you take on lightly, is it? It’s not flippant or trivial. It’s a huge commitment.’
However, that doesn’t mean the star is beyond a little self-reflection.
He added: ‘When I look back myself I’m like, “F***ing hell, that’s quite a few marriages there”.’
