Victoria Mary Clarke, the wife of late The Pogues singer , has said her husband contacted her from ‘the other side’

The Irish journalist and writer, 57,at the end of November 2023 – MacGowan after that left him needing regular hospital treatment.

Despite only marrying in 2018, Victoria and MacGowan were together for decades and had already been engaged for 11 years by the time they tied the knot.

On Christmas Day, which was also the Irish singer’s birthday, she posted an emotional update saying that she ‘[couldn’t] stop crying’ and wondered how others have gotten through important anniversaries after a person has died.

Now, in the new year, she’s shared a comforting story, saying that a ‘nudge’ from MacGowan from ‘the other side’ has encouraged her to pick up the guitar again.

‘I haven’t played my guitar since Shane died,’ she began. ‘But last night while I was trying to watch TV I kept getting nudges from him to open the drawer of his desk.’

‘I kept trying to ignore the nudges and I tried to keep watching TV but something wouldn’t let me and I had to get up and open the drawer. Inside the drawer was a plectrum, so I picked it up and then I picked up the guitar.’

Victoria then gave details of what it felt like to start picking up the guitar again after so long, adding that MacGowan was sending her ideas from ‘the other side’ as she played.

‘I played a few chords and it genuinely felt like there was an energy that was coming through and making up a tune. Who knows what we are capable of from the other side?’

Writing for , she said: ‘He looked very peaceful and there was an immediate atmosphere of grace in the hospital room.’

‘He was surrounded by thousands of angels in the moment of his passing and they filled us all with love and peace,’ she wrote in her emotional tribute.

Her comments came after she gave mourners a ‘big warm’ smile at MacGowan’s funeral in December which saw thousands line the streets to pay tribute.

She was ‘smiling right until the last’ despite how much he was ‘struggling or in pain’ before the end.

Victoria was also made to clarify that MacGowan’s last wish at his wake, but for peace and love.

She said on X: ‘I just want to say that Shane MacGowan did NOT make a last request to leave 10k behind the bar, his last request was for peace and love in the world.’

At the time of his death, Victoria shared a statement, saying: ‘Shane will always be the light that I hold before me and the measure of my dreams and the love of my life.’ 

‘I am blessed beyond words to have met him and to have loved him and to have been so endlessly and unconditionally loved by him and to have had so many years of life and love and joy and fun and laughter and so many adventures.’
