Shawn Mendes feels like he’s ‘drowning’ as he opens up on worries in honest letter

has opened up about his mental health as he admits he worried people would ‘think less’ of him .

The singer first shot to fame as a teenager when his 2016 song Stitches received massive attention around the world, and at 23 his career is .

However Shawn has revealed he and can feel like a failure or that he is ‘drowning’ despite his clear success.

Shawn, who boasts almost 27 million followers on Twitter, took to the site on Wednesday where he shared an honest, open letter with fans so they could know ‘the truth’.

The Grammy-winner wrote: ‘I’m afraid that if people know and see the truth they might think less of me. They might become bored of me.

‘So in those moments of feeling low I either put on a show or hide.

‘The truth, in current form is a 23 year old who constantly feels like he’s either flying or drowning.

‘Maybe that’s just what it is to be in your 20’s (I don’t know), or maybe that’s just me.’

Shawn added: ‘Sometimes I really don’t care what people think and I feel free. Most of the time it’s a struggle tho that’s the truth.

‘The truth is even with sp much success I still find it hard to feel like I’m not failing.

‘Hyper focused on what I don’t have, forgetting to see all that I do.

‘The truth is I’m overwhelmed and overstimulated.’

He went on to assure concerned fans that he is ‘okay’ and hoped that his opening up could ‘resonate with some people.’

The popular musician was flooded with replies from well-wishers: fans, friends and those who struggled with the same feelings, and the post certainly resonated with people, having been liked close to 100,000 times.

Shawn followed up the post with a series of tweets where he thanked people for letting him speak his truth.

He added that if he feels this way ‘with all of the blessings I have,’ then ‘there must be so many people feeling this and just don’t want them to feel alone.’

Shawn had been in a high-profile relationship with fellow musician Camila Cabello since 2019, but the pair eventually in November 2021.

Both Shawn and Camila – who had a number one hit with their duet Senorita – admitted their break-up was hugely tough on them, with Camilla later admitting .

Shawn, meanwhile, took a social media break, telling followers in December that he was ‘having a little bit of a hard time’ with it.

The former couple announced their split in a joint statement last year, where they insisted that while their romance was over, ‘our love for one another as humans is stronger than ever.

‘We started our relationship as best friends and will continue to be best friends, so we appreciate your support from the beginning and moving forward.’
