’s absurdly delayed pirate adventure is no longer going to be out this year, but there is an open beta for anyone still interested.

You can’t help but imagine that there’s some kind of sunk cost fallacy going on at Ubisoft when it comes to Skull And Bones, a multiplayer pirate MMO that never looked especially interesting and has been delayed so many times now it’s getting absurd.

The game started development in 2013, as a spin-off from Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, and that means it will have taken exactly a decade to make when it’s finally released on March 9, 2023.

Or rather that should be IF it’s released, since there’s no reason to expect that release date will prove any more reliable than any of the others.

Ubisoft’s comment on the issue is brief, as they claim that while ‘the game development is finished’ extra time is need to ‘further polish and balance the experience’.

The game was supposed to be out on November 8, so that is four months’ worth of spit and polish, that you can only hope will be evident in the final product.

You’ll be able to get an advance look at the game if you join the open beta that will be held at an unspecified point ‘ahead of the game’s worldwide launch’.

That’s especially vague as it doesn’t indicate whether it’ll be this year or next, but the implication seems to be 2023.

Skull And Bones is set in the Indian Ocean during the 17th century and is described as being a ‘piracy fantasy’ with ‘gritty naval combat’.
