Sir Elton John bows out in style with ‘best ever’ Glastonbury show: ‘Unbelievable, timeless genius’

Sir delivered an all time classic show to say farewell to the UK with an epic headlining set.

The Rocket Man legend may have played his last ever show on these shores as his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour comes to an end in Europe next month, and he went out in style with one of .

From surprises guests to timeless hits, Sir Elton delivered in spades with an absolutely mammoth Worthy Farm crowd and people watching at home blown away by the spectacle.

Kicking things off with The Who’s Pinball Wizard – which he hadn’t played live for over a decade – the 76-year-old icon delivered hit after hit, and was clearly loving every second of it.

‘How is Elton doing this at 76 years old? What an unbelievable, timeless genius. ❤️,’ tweeted one fan, while another added: ‘Elton John might just have pulled off the best Glastonbury headline set ever.’

And a third wrote: ‘That’s one of the best headliner acts ever at Glasto right? Elton was brilliant from start to finish!’

There was a lot of hype about special guests after his husband David Furnish promised four surprises, with the likes of Britney Spears, Taron Egerton and Sir Paul McCartney all rumoured in the buildup.

However, Sir Elton threw everyone a curveball, instead largely staying true to form by using the guest slots to champion new music, with Jacob Lusk – one third of Gabriels – belting out Are You Ready For Love? with the London Community Gospel Choir.

Later, 20-year-old singer Stephen Sanchez had the honour of coming out and actually playing his own track, rather than duetting on an Elton classic.

‘I wanted to have newer artists, save for one person, and this boy I heard last year on the radio… I’ve asked him to come to Glastonbury to do his song and he’s an amazing young talent,’ Sir Elton said before they played Stephen’s 2022 hit Until I Found You.

Fans waiting for Britney to help recreate their Hold Me Closer duetwhen The Killers frontman Brandon Flowers came out for a rendition of Tiny Dancer.

While Twitter was awash with Alan Partridge memes thanks to Brandon’s outfit choice, others were just gutted Britney didn’t make an appearance.

‘To be fair, Brandon Flowers and Britney Spears are probably next to each other in Elton’s contacts. Maybe his finger slipped,’ joked one viewer, as a different person tweeted: ‘All “upcoming except one” and it’s Brandon flowers… I am going after the person that created that Britney Spears rumour… ????’

Another rumoured act was Dua Lipa, but instead Sir Elton gave her a shout out before playing their collaboration Cold Heart.

The final special guest of the night was the epic Rina Sawayama, who signed a deal in 2020 and went onto release her debut album while launching a modelling and acting career, having appeared in John Wick: Chapter 4.

Fresh off her own Glastonbury solo set where she , Rina was all smiles as she played the role of Kiki Dee on Don’t Go Breaking My Heart.

There was plenty of emotion too, with Sir Elton delivered a moving performances of Candle In The Wind set to video clips of Marilyn Monroe, while he later on what would have been the singer’s 60th birthday.

The final few songs were an absolute tour de force, with a triple whammy of Crocodile Rock, Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting and I’m Still Standing.

After Cold Heart and the George Michael tribute, it was time for a moving and stunning performance of Rocket Man with an extended outro as Sir Elton made the most of his moment on the Pyramid Stage.

In a special message to fans, his final words at Glastonbury were: ‘I want to thank you all for dressing up in your costumes, your glasses and your outfits, it makes me feel so happy and so loved.

‘I also want to thank you for 52 years of amazing love and loyalty that you’ve shown me. It’s been an incredible journey.

‘I’ve had the best time, I will never forget you, you’re in my head and my heart and my soul, you’ve been amazing. You’ve been an incredible crowd tonight. I wish you love and health and happiness.’
