Sir Patrick Stewart came nail-bitingly close to making major blunder while presenting Bafta award

came extremely close to making a mistake while presenting at last night’s… but fortunately, stopped himself at the last minute.

At the 2023 award ceremony, the war film All Quiet on the Western Front was of the evening, alongside stars such as , Cate Blanchett, Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan.

was awarded the prize for best British film, which was presented to writer and director Martin McDonagh by the and X-Men star.

However, before the winner was announced, Sir Patrick almost revealed the results prematurely.

The moment in question was discussed on Monday’s Good Morning Britain, when entertainment editor Richard Arnold, who’d been present at the event in London, said: ‘Another moment saw X-Men legend Patrick Stewart almost reveal a winner before we’d even seen the nominations.’

As the 82-year-old arrived on stage to deliver the award, he introduced the films in the category by stating: ‘Curious, thrilling, compassionate, heartbreaking, and brave. Tonight’s films challenge us to reassess our past, change how we viewed our present, and gave us all a hope for the future.’

The next course of action was for the nominees to be showcased on screen.

However, before that happened, Sir Patrick went to open the envelope up in front of him, which would have revealed which movie had won the accolade.

Realising his error, as he looked up behind him at the screen, the actor placed a hand over his month as he gazed out at the audience, who laughed at his mishap.

Then, when the time came to announce the winner, he needed reminding that he was the one who was to deliver the news, as he said: ‘Me? Oh yes! Of course. So sorry.’

In his speech, playwright and filmmaker Martin pointed out that some of the Irish cast and crew of his film questioned the movie being up for best British film.

The Banshees of Inisherin won several awards on the night, including best original screenplay, best supporting actress for Kerry and best supporting actor for Barry.

However, it lost out on best film to All Quiet on the Western Front and in the original score and editing categories, while Colin Farrell didn’t win best leading actor, as the recognition went to Elvis actor Austin instead.

Several people , while Austin used his speech to pay homage to the Presley family, as well as Elvis’ late daughter, Lisa Marie Presley.
