Spy Kids fans, you’re in luck – Netflix has officially confirmed it’s rebooting the film franchise after 21 years.
The streaming giant will team up with the original filmmaker, Robert Rodriguez, to reimagine the movies for a new generation.
Rodriguez, who also will write, direct, and produce the new film.
The plot is being kept under wraps, but it’s thought the movie will introduce a new family of spies.
Netflix announced the exciting news in a tweet, writing: ‘Spy Kids was released March 30, 2001.
‘So the 21st anniversary of the beloved action comedy feels like the perfect time to reveal that Robert @Rodriguez will write, direct, and produce a reimagining of the beloved franchise and introduce the world to a new family of spies.’
We’re very ready.
The original Spy Kids films starred Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara as Carmen and Juni Cortez, the kids who become involved in their parents’ espionage organisation.
Antonio Banderas starred as Gregorio Cortez, with Carla Gugino as Ingrid Cortez.
Casting for the new flick has not yet been announced, or whether Alexa and Daryl () will make an appearance a la Devin D. Ratray as Buzz McAllister
The Spy Kids franchise was massively successful, with the first film resulting in three sequels, The Island of Lost Dreams, released in 2002, Game Over in 2003 and All the Time in the World in 2011.
As for how fans will feel about the reboot, only time will tell…
The Spy Kids reboot does not yet have a release date.
