has been called out for his ‘weird take’ on women’s rights to abortion after he said ‘no woman wants to have one’.
The TalkTV presenter had been responding to Countdown host ’s comments after she told BBC Woman’s Hour that if she had her time again she wouldn’t go through with terminating her pregnancy in her early 20s.
The conversation was sparked by the growing concern that the legal right to .
‘Very powerful insight into the reality of abortion,’ Piers tweeted. ‘No woman wants to have one, or feels proud about it, and it often causes shame & regret.
‘But I still believe, like Anne, that women should be allowed to make that choice for themselves.’
Piers’ remarks were criticised by many who believed that he was adding to the ‘stigma’ surrounding abortion.
‘That is categorically not true,’ one person retorted. ‘Many women who have abortions do so because they want to and it’s not always a complicated choice for people to make. Many women also will not feel shame or regret and nor should they – this language is dripping in stigma.’
Echoing a similar sentiment, another hit out: ‘This is such a f*cking weird take (unsurprising) getting an abortion shouldn’t be shameful. In many cases it’s absolutely the right thing to do.
‘Men saying stuff like this just creates even more of a stigma. Let women do what they want with their own f*cking bodies.’
A third added: ‘This is not true. Many women do want to have abortions – stop adding to the stigma.’
Journalist Ash Sarkar said: ‘This language is so stigmatizing. Abortion is a v difficult decision for lots of women. But for lots of women, it’s not. And framing abortion so negatively creates room for anti-choicers.’
Earlier this week it was revealed that a decision to overrule the Roe v Wade case could lead to abortion bans in potentially half the states of America.
The US Supreme Court has confirmed the authenticity of the L***ed draft but it does not represent the court’s final word as the language could change before the court issues its ruling.
Following the news, US president Joe Biden has said he hoped the draft would not be finalised by justices, contending it reflected a ‘fundamental shift in American jurisprudence’ that threatened ‘other basic rights’ like access to birth control and marriage.
