Capcom’s new fighting game sequel is going to be multiformat, as the first gameplay trailer reveals they’ve changed the logo.
The PlayStation State of Play on Thursday night was more significant than anyone expected, even though it had very few first party games (just ). Rather being Sony’s big night it was really Capcom that had the most new games to show off, including the , a PlayStation VR2 version of Resident Evil Village, and… Street Fighter 6.
Street Fighter 6 was first but at that time Capcom didn’t show any gameplay, whereas that was the primary focus in the State of Play.
It looked great, with an interesting mix of realism and anime style flourishes but the most important information came outside of the State of Play: unlike Street Fighter 5 the game will be multiformat and will release on PlayStation 5, PC, and Series X/S sometime next year.
The video features four fighters: two classic and two brand new. Ryu and Chun-Li being in the game aren’t exactly a surprise but they both looked great, especially Chunners.
It’s still hard to understand why there’s so much focus on newcomer Luke, as he looks pretty obnoxious and there doesn’t seem to be anything particularly special about his moveset. Jamie looks more interesting though, with Capcom describing him as a breakdancer who quaffs a ‘ki-unleashing drink’.
The effects when you perform a special move for any of the characters are cool, as it almost looks like paint being splashed around, while there’s a lot of focus on Metro City in the footage – the location for the Final Fight games.
That suggests that Final Fight’s three main characters Cody, Guy, and Mike Haggar will be in the game, but plenty of villains have appeared in various Street Fighter games before as well.
A post on the adds a number of other details, including the presence of Arcade Mode, online matches, Training Mode, and local versus battles within the Fighting Ground mode.
There’ll also be two new modes called World Tour and Battle Hub. The latter is for online play and can be seen at the end of the trailer, but World Tour is described as ‘a single-player immersive story mode that pushes the boundaries of what a fighting game is’.
This is what’s being shown at the beginning of the trailer, with Luke moving around Metro City in what seems to be a free-roaming mode with exploration and ad hoc fights.
The game will use the RE Engine seen in the modern Resident Evil games and Devil May Cry 5, and an optional, simplified control system for performing special moves and combos – a relatively common feature in modern fighters, even if Street Fighter’s moves are never that difficult.
There’s also the new Drive System – a new gauge which determines which moves you can perform – and a Real Time Commentary Feature. This will feature famous commentators from the esports scene who will provide ‘easy-to-understand explanations about gameplay’ as you play, which could be very useful for new players.
There’s a lot more detail on Capcom’s website but the one thing it doesn’t mention is the original Street Fighter 6 logo, which Capcom were accused of , has now been changed – or at least we don’t see it anywhere in the new trailer.
