The incident shocked viewers at home, but also , with the likes of and Sienna Miller scrambling later to figure out what on Earth went on.
Chaos ensued when the comedian made a jibe about Jada’s bald head, despite her being open about her struggles with alopecia since 2018.
The Men in Black star laughed initially, but his expression soon turned sour as he saw his wife rolling her eyes.
Before anyone knew what was happening, Will was on stage, and telling him: ‘Keep my wife’s name out of your f****** mouth.’
After their showdown, a hilarious photo emerged of a group of stars Googling the exchange, trying to pinpoint exactly what caused it.
Derek Blasberg, head of fashion and beauty at YouTube tweeted a snap of celebs gossiping about the incident, with Taika in particular looking shocked.
‘Meanwhile, this is everybody at my table at the @vanityfair Oscar dinner manically googling wtf Will Smith just said to Chris Rock,’ Derek tweeted.
The pic shows the stars gathered around an iPhone, trying to make sense of all the madness.
Taika’s expression was simply a picture, with his eyes wide and mouth agape as he stared directly into the camera, which was our whole mood watching the drama unfold.
Meanwhile, Sienna looked especially invested in the beef while Sarah Paulson seemed to be explaining the goings on.
Twitter users were obsessed with the photo, with one branding it a ‘renaissance painting.’
‘Taika is me at any mild inconvenience,’ one tweeted.
Another wrote: ‘this made me giggle i forgot celebs are humans too.’
It can be assumed that the celebs’ detective skills told them how Chris said he was looking forward to G.I. Jane 2, referencing Jada’s short hair, which she previously shaved.
The night was truly a rollercoaster as, shortly after the intense moment, Will won his first ever Oscar award for best actor.
He bagged the trophy for his role in King Richard, in which he plays the father of tennis legends Venus and Serena Williams.
The Men in Black star thanked the Academy for the ‘honour’ in his acceptance speech, also joking that he hopes to be ‘invited back’ next year.
