The judge and children’s author appeared on Thursday evening’s episode of the BBC show and opened up about his introduction to reading as a kid.
However, he gave a tongue in cheek nod to E.L. James’ racy 50 Shades of Grey book, joking that the novel – which was released 2011 – was his pathway to literature.
He joked: ‘I wasn’t interested in reading when I was young, but my mum used to take me and my sister to the library every couple of weeks and we’d select books and one day I found a book that I absolutely loved and it really got me into reading.
‘It was called 50 Shades Of Grey.’
While the studio erupted into laughter, David quickly corrected himself.
‘Sorry, sorry,’ he added. ‘Charlie And The Chocolate Factory… and that got me into reading.’
The One Show host Ronan Kemp quipped: ‘Not an appropriate book for children whatsoever.’
David added: ‘You just need something that you want to read for yourself. Because when you’re a kid, your parents tell you to read books or teachers tell you to read books, but to actually find books you want to read.’
The Little Britain star was in (what’s new there?), and he joked that he wasn’t sure if media reports about Simon Cowell’s plans to tie the knot with fiance Lauren Silverman next month are ‘actually true’.
‘I don’t know if that is actually true,’ he teased. ‘Basically, he got to 62 without ever getting married so I don’t know if he is in a rush to get married, but it will be wonderful if I do get invited.
‘I hope so, but he might keep it very small.’
One Show presenter Alex Scott told him: ‘You need to get in touch with that wedding planner, imagine.’
Speaking about Lauren, David replied: ‘I think she will want a big wedding. I don’t imagine it will be a small thing.’
He joked: ‘But obviously I want to be there and ruin the day for him.’
