This boring Unreal Engine 5 demo of a train station is the best video game graphics you’ve ever seen

An incredible new Unreal Engine 5 tech demo is all the more impressive because it’s the work of just a single developer.

As amazing as the PlayStation 5 seemed it was obvious that no game would ever look like that any time soon, because that’s what always happens with tech demos.

With no artificial intelligence or gameplay to take up processing power, everything is put into the graphics and nothing else, which is impossible for an actual game.

Even so, it’s hard not to be impressed by the graphics, especially when the fan made demo above manages to make the Epic Games one look like a Mega Drive game by comparison.

The demo is just short of three minutes long and for some reason the subject matter is Etchū-Daimon train station in Toyama, Japan.

Why you’d want to create such a thing in photorealistic detail we’re not sure but that’s absolutely what the demo looks like, with an astonishing level of realism.

It’s all the more impressive because it’s the work of a single individual, one Lorenzo Drago. As far as we can see he doesn’t state what the demo is running on, but we would assume it’s a PC rather than a console.

According to him the lighting is courtesy of Unreal’s Lumen technology but he hasn’t used the Nanite geometry from the official demo.

He’s using VR controls to move around the environment but there don’t seem to be any plans to turn it into an actual game, even though it totally looks like a survival horror as soon as he switches to a night-time setting.

So far, no video game has used Unreal Engine 5, with the closest so far being tech demo.

The and are using it though, and it should become commonplace thereafter, even if it never looks quite as good as this.

Unreal Engine is also increasingly being used outside of the games industry and was key to producing the visuals for The Volume system used as a replacement for green screen filming in productions such as The Mandalorian.
