McFly’s is still slightly hung up on a run-in he had with music legend Sir Rod Stewart.

In an exclusive interview with Metro’s Guilty Pleasures, the I’ll Be OK singer spilled how the rocker, 70, accidentally insulted him on a phone call with bandmate Danny Jones.

‘Once Rod called us – or called Danny – and he was on loud speaker and he didn’t know he was on loud speaker,’ Tom explained.

‘He was telling Danny that Danny should have sung all the songs because his voice is way better than mine, and I was like, “Hi Rod, I’m here.” It was an awful moment.’

Sometimes, Tom, The First Cut is the Deepest…

At the moment the 36-year-old is dialled in putting the finishing touches to a new album with the rest of the McFly boys, including Dougie Poynter and Harry Judd.

‘We started it last summer… and we’re hopefully putting a plan into motion to get it released by the end of the year,’ he teased.

‘I don’t want to give too much away, but it’s very band-y again, which is nice, because the last album [2020’s Young Dumb Thrills] was our first in 10 years and we were finding our feet, and I feel like we’ve remembered who McFly is. It’s been good fun.’

Sadly, though, Tom has ruled out a return to reality TV following his stint on Strictly Come Dancing, after he was the eighth person to be voted off the BBC One competition alongside pro partner Amy Dowden.

He said: ‘Being on those shows, it’s really intense, especially when you’ve got lots of other things going on in your life. I’ve got the band and books to write and things that I love. Having to put them on hold for that time was tricky.’

Tom previously teared up when on the programme during an appearance on It Takes Two, becaming visibly upset when a montage of his best bits was being played.

He said: ‘I’ve loved it so much, I’m only crying because I’ve had the best time.

‘I’m so happy I did this show.’
