Broadway veteran Michael McGrath has died aged 65.

The Tony Award-winning actor – who has more than 15 credits to his name since making his Broadway debut in 1992 in musical My Favorite Year – died at his home in Bloomfield, New Jersey on Thursday.

His publicist confirmed the sad news to Variety, and while a cause of death is yet to be confirmed, it has been described as ‘sudden’.

During his career, he appeared in the likes of Plaza Suite, Tootsie, Spamalot and Nice Work if You Can Get It, with the latter earning McGrath his Tony in 2012.

Monty Python legend Eric Idle paid tribute to the late actor on X (formerly Twitter) as he sent ‘warm hugs’ to the whole Spamalot family during a difficult time.

He wrote: ‘Very saddened to hear that Michael McGrath our first and most beloved Patsy in Spamalot, has passed away. Warm hugs to all the Spamalot family and very happy memories of a lovely man.’
