TheDanDangler, a Call Of Duty streamer, has been banned for ‘inappropriate attire’ – calling into question Twitch’s moderation practices.
Twitch is a platform where at any one time, anything could be streaming. However, the moderation team can get a little overzealous with their decisions, and the reasons for banning various members of the site, no matter how big they are.
TheDanDangler is a Call Of Duty partnered streamer who has recently joined the hot tub meta, wherein streamers will do themed streams while in a hot tub. has seen huge success with the meta but many others have also joined in.
In now-deleted tweets responding to the ban, Lanza stated that her stream was set up so that it would not go against Twitch’s guidelines. However, she was washing her car in a bikini, which might have caused the ban.
Twitch’s moderation uses real people, rather than competitor Google’s method with YouTube, which utilises a range of bots.
This is why you’ll see uploads of copyrighted material on YouTube that features odd cuts or is flipped and shrunk into a corner, as that’s harder for the bots to analyse and take down.
While Google’s method is extreme, Twitch’s real person moderation staff can be just as callous with how they treat members of the platform.
In the case of TheDanDangler, her ‘inappropriate’ bikini was clearly labelled and placed into a segment of the website that, unless the stream really took off, would be a little harder to find.
This isn’t the first time a minor infraction has banned a channel and while most partners or bigger streamers on the platform often don’t get banned permanently, Twitch banning someone can harm their income, regardless of how they make it while streaming.
Twitch’s audience is beginning to turn on a lot of the ‘e-girls’ that have spawned since the success of the hot tub meta, with some claiming the use of sexualised streams is an unfair advantage.
TheDanDangler was after a day and has resumed streaming already.
