After Smash Bros. pro Chillin had a stroke, stars like Ninja and Ludwig have come together to donate to cover the costs.
Chillin is a Smash Bros. professional who debuted way back in 2002 with Super Smash Bros. Melee. He would regularly come in the top 10 or 20 players in any tournament he participated in, garnering a fanbase of his own over the years.
However, after an infection in his leg caused a stroke, he has been left at the mercy of the American health system and a grim $400,000 medical bill. The next stage of his recovery will involve open heart surgery and his insurance won’t cover the entirety of the bill.
Though the bill is steep, streaming stars from across the internet have begun to push forward with donations – along with Chillin’s fans, friends, and family – raising nearly £200,000 ($229,637).
Twitch stars like Ninja and YouTube’s Ludwig have donated £20,803.50 ($25,000) and £8,321.40 (£10,000) respectively. Others from the streaming circles, like Atrioc and Team Liquid, have come forward by donating a total of £9,849.42 ($11,829).
Other donators include legacy Starcraft: Brood War player and CEO of Team Liquid, , who personally donated $2,000. Vish Kumar, esports commentator for Pokémon and others, has donated $1,000.
Meanwhile, another is planning on raising money through his streams when he returns from his trip.
So despite the insurmountable odds created by the American healthcare system, the GoFundMe looks to be on the path to raising the full $400,000 needed.
