Ulrika Jonsson reflects on past abortion amid controversial US Supreme Court debate: ‘It was my choice’

revealed she had an abortion in 1996 and hailed her decision as ‘clear cut.’

The 54-year-old presenter candidly shared her experience following reports that the nationwide legal right to terminate unwanted pregnancies under the 1973 Roe v Wade ruling.

Ulrika – who has four children – opened up about her decision which occurred in the early stages of another relationship as she went through a divorce.

In her latest column, she said: ‘Contraception had failed me and I was neither willing to have or prepared for another child. I chose a termination. There was not a moment’s doubt in my mind. And most importantly, it was my choice.’

She added to : ‘I carry no guilt over that. It was clear cut. My body was not ready for a pregnancy, my mind even less so.

‘To that end, there was no emotional trauma surrounding my decision because for me it was my right to have the procedure.’

Ulrika’s first marriage was to cameraman John Turnbull in 1990 until their split five years later, before marrying Lance Gerrard-Wright – a contestant from a dating show she was hosting – in 2003 before they split in 2006.

Then in 2008, Ulrika married Brian Monet, and it seemed like she was finally in with a chance of having found a partner for life, however after 11 years of marriage the pair separated.

‘Our bodies should never be in the hands of politicians. I hope we can raise our voices to protect our right to have a safe abortion, which is a right that so many people before us have worked so hard to get.’
