faced a major blow this weekend as and were forced to pull out just hours before Saturday’s live show.
The the Charleston in the quarter-finals but instead had to withdraw from the competition on medical grounds.
Now the show has confirmed there will be no elimination this weekend, and invited Nigel and Katya on the show to have a final goodbye.
As the hosts played some of Nigel and Katya’s highlights from the show, Katya was unable to take it and burst into tears, sobbing into Nigel Harman’s shoulder.
The couple never even faced a dance-off and were ‘disappointed’ at the situation.
What was Nigel Harman’s injury?
Nigel, 50, explained he had suffered a major injury to his rib after ‘leaping’ during a practice routine where he was ‘supposed to be caught by handsome men’ as he was ‘Peter Pan-ned’ through the air, but things didn’t go quite to plan.
‘I injured my rib and it’s quite painful,’ he said, admitting ‘I’m a little bit high on painkillers as well.’
As he and Katya watched clips from their time on the show, the professional dancer sobbed.
‘It’s quite hard… I’ve loved every moment of us on the dancefloor,’ she said, telling him ‘I hope you’ve got something you can cherish forever.’
Nigel said their elimination from the show ‘hasn’t sunk in,’ and it was only when he watched the other dance partners kicking off the show, he realised ‘this is real.’
After the news of Nigel’s sudden exit was announced, a BBC spokesperson told Metro.co.uk: ‘Unfortunately Nigel has sustained an injury which means he is unable to perform in tonight’s show and has had to withdraw from Strictly.’
The official Instagram account for the series posted the news.
Alongside the statement, they added: ‘We wish Nigel a speedy recovery and they both will be very much missed by our entire Strictly family.’ The post was shared by Nigel.
As Saturday’s show kicked off, hosts and addressed the sudden departure of Nigel and Katya, and said they were ‘as devastated as he is.’
They confirmed ‘there will be no public vote tonight and no elimination this weekend.’
However, ‘judges will still be scoring and the scores will be carried over’ to next week.
‘Nigel wasn’t in training this morning, and other dancers were informed later on in the day. He and Katya were really disappointed as they were hoping to stay in the competition,’ a source told
‘They hadn’t been in the bottom two so had a real chance of making it to the finals.
‘Nigel has been training really hard and really threw himself into rehearsals.’
This leaves just four couples remaining in the competition – Bobby Brazier and Dianne Buswell, Ellie Leach and Vito Coppola, Layton Williams and Nikita Kuzmin, and finally, Annabel Croft and Johannes Radebe.
Just four hours before the announcement, Katya, 34, shared her excitement about their upcoming performance.
Alongside the Strictly Come Dancing logo, which had been embellished with the word ‘musicals’ in aid of the themed week Katya wrote: ‘Here we go!!!’
BBC are yet to make any announcements about how this will impact the three remaining episodes. In 2021, AJ Odudu sustained a foot injury which meant she couldn’t compete in the live final which meant just two couples participated. The 2023 final could also be a similar format.
– Amanda Abbington, 39, left after five weeks.
A Strictly spokesperson said at the time: ‘ is unable to continue in Strictly Come Dancing and has decided to withdraw from the competition. The show wishes her all the best for the future.’
Strictly Come Dancing continues tonight at 7.25pm on BBC One.
