Season two of made its long-awaited debut on March 25, and naturally, fans have had to update themselves on period drama lingo.

Stepping away from â€™s novels,  on the Sharma family.

Viewers followed Anthony Bridgerton () catching the eye of Edwina Sharma (Charithra Chandran), while her older, unmarried sister Kate () is set against the match.

That isn’t the only romance Lady Whistledown is gossiping about across the ton, as Eloise Bridgerton is forced to make her debut and follow in her sister’s footsteps, and  desperately tries to secure her family’s future.

The ton is a term originating in the 1800s and was used to describe high-society London. The word is short for ‘le bon ton,’ which means good manners.

From the costume to the show’s dialect, Bridgerton certainly exudes sophistication.

Characters are referred to as the ‘talk of the ton’, which essentially translates to them being the toast of high society, with an intense spotlight on their elegance, wealth, and class.

Indeed, this detail mirrors the real-life Regency era too, as the term was often used among the types of groups portrayed in Bridgerton.

The Netflix series is based on the eight books by Julia Quinn. Each novel focuses on a different Bridgerton sibling: Daphne, Anthony, Benedict, Colin, Eloise, Francesca, Hyacinth, and Gregory. 

The first book, titled The Duke and I, tells the story of Daphne Bridgerton and Simon Basset, played by Phoebe Dynevor and Regé-Jean Page, respectively in the first season of the Netflix show.

The popular programme provides a fascinating insight into what life in the English capital may have been like at that time (with the added orchestral accompaniment of  and ), filming actually took place in several locations around the country including Buckinghamshire, Bath and Greenwich.
