Pachinko

Anna Sawai and Jimmi Simpson in ?Pachinko,? premiering globally on March 25 on Apple TV+.
More Gone With The Wind than The Hunger Games (Picture: Juhan Noh)

If has whetted your appetite for Korean drama then… here’s something completely different.

Pachinko does take its name from a popular game, but this epic family saga based on Min Jin Lee’s best-seller of the same name is more Gone With The Wind than The Hunger Games.

It traces the highs and lows experienced by Sunja (Youn Yuh-jung) as she strives to create a better life for her family, even if that means leaving her homeland and starting with nothing in America, cast once more here as the land of dreams.

Or is that nightmares?

Available Friday.

Disney+

Olivia Rodrigo: driving home 2 u

OLIVIA RODRIGO: DRIVING HOME 2 U (A SOUR FILM) - (Interscope Geffen A&M)
Hit the road (Picture: Interscope/Geffen/A&M)

Given that the teenage Rodrigo’s breakout global smash hit was called Driver’s Licence, it makes sense that a background documentary charting the creation of debut album Sour and her rise to fame would take the form of a road movie.

Thankfully there’s no cruising past the homes of exes here – instead there are new versions of Sour songs, relaxed interviews and a snapshot of a 19-year old star firmly behind the wheel of her own career.

Available Friday.

Walter Presents/All4

Inside

Inside WALTER PRESENTS: INSIDE. Committed to a psychiatric clinic against her will, Ana, 28, is found murdered the day before her release. A young cop, Ang?le, is sent to investigate. It is her first case and, to top it all off, she is told she will be working alone. The inquiry proves even trickier than she expected. How can she rely on the statements of patients with mental issues? And is the killer a patient or actually a staff member who disguised the murder as an act of somebody who is criminally insane? In order to solve the case Ang?le must get inside the clinic and question the patients. All the suspects are mentally disturbed, yet they are endearing and funny. Angele gets involved to the point where she starts feeling more comfortable around patients rather than ?normal? people ? but will she let her own feelings cloud her judgement?
Intriguing French mystery (Picture: Walter Presents/All4)

That’s inside as in inside a psychiatric hospital rather than inside a prison, though the parallels are clear in this intriguing six-part French murder mystery.

Noémie Schmidt, who enjoyed the odd romp or two as Henrietta of England in sexed up period drama Versailles, is in rather more sombre mood here as Angéle, a young police detective on a mission to unmask the killer of Ana, a patient brutally stabbed the day before she was due to be released.

Available Friday.

Amazon Prime

Meet the stars who don’t fit the mould (Picture: James Clark/Amazon Prime Video)

Larger than life is a good way to describe Lizzo and the Good As Hell star brings a megapack of energy to this reality contest designed to give dancers who don’t fit the typical stereotype their big break.

Amazon Prime has another barrier-busting release with No Woman No Try, a doc that celebrates the role women’s rugby is playing in breaking down who can and can’t make it to the top in elite sport.

Both available Friday.

Netflix

Is It Cake?

Netflix?s new reality show Is It Cake?
Bake Off on shrooms (Picture: Adam Rose/Netflix)

When is cake not a cake? When it’s a bowling ball, or a shoe, or a stack of paper cups. Except then it’s a cake as well. Or is it?

OK, enough with the gateaux of confusion, this crackpot confection of a cooking contest challenges bakers to make cakes that look unerringly like everyday objects: and the results are extraordinary.

Hosted by comedian Mikey Day, a man who really shouldn’t be left home alone with a cake slice, it’s like Bake Off wandered out of the tent and found a field of magic mushrooms.
