Before making his MasterChef debut, here’s everything you need to know about the twirly moustache-wearing operatic star.
Who is Wynne Evans?
First appearing in the Go Compare commercials in 2009, Wynne made a name for himself wearing a tuxedo and outlandish moustache as he belted out the catchy jingle.
Potentially one of the most well-known faces in Britain, the Welsh opera singer embodied the role of the flamboyant Gio Compario and later began showing up in the telly adverts as himself.
Before signing that contract that would change his life forever, Wynne put in hours training at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the National Opera studio and later became a principal at the Welsh National Opera.
He revealed to Metro.co.uk that he shared a shocking connection to Gary Lineker and voiced one of the former footballer’s famous Walkers crisps adverts back in the day.
Is Wynne Evans an opera singer in real life?
Yes, the answer is short and sweet.
Wynne admitted his hesitation in committing to playing the singing character for the popular TV commercials as he was a serious opera musician and worried Go Compare would taint that profession.
He exclusively shared: ‘I said, “No, I don’t wanna be in the ad, I’m a principal at the Royal Opera House. I’m a very serious singer”’ when asked to front the campaign all those years ago.
Wynne explained that kept singing with the opera house until 2016, following which he switched his focus to presenting his show on BBC Radio Wales.
The budding cook revealed that he stopped singing because he had done it for 25 years and had sung everywhere he wanted to sing.
