Warning: spoilers ahead for episode 1 of on Plus.
The on Disney Plus excited fans beyond belief following its release date this week, while also sparking several questions that are yet to be answered in the Marvel series.
One of the questions was whether the human statue in the cast that Steven Grant () befriends and confides in about his day in is actually Crawley, a significant character from the comic books.
In Moon Knight, the main character has , meaning that at times he embodies the persona Steven, an awkward British museum gift shop worker, while at other times he reverts back to being Marc Spector, an American mercenary with lethal skills.
Much of the first episode follows Steven as he discovers Marc’s presence in his life, as well as the fact that Marc is a conduit for the Egyptian moon god , fighting injustice as a masked hero.
Steven is shown speaking to a human statue, who’s painted gold and doesn’t respond to anything the protagonist has to say.
Who is Crawley in the Marvel comics?
In the original source material, Crawley – full name Bertrand Crawley – is a former textbook salesperson who has become homeless.
He becomes an ally of Moon Knight, acting as his informant on the streets.
Following the release of the first episode, several fans drew the conclusion that the living statue was definitely Crawley from the comics.
‘WHOA WHOA WHOA #MoonKnight spoilers. The street performer was Crawley?!’ one person tweeted.
‘So… Is the street performer Crawley? That’d be rad,’ another person said.
In the credits for the episodes, it was confirmed that Shaun Scott – the actor who played the performer – was portraying the role of Bertrand Crawley.
Having previously teased that Crawley wasn’t a part of the live-action Moon Knight show, creator Jeremy Slater later tweeted: ‘Okay, I lied a little. We’ve got a Crawley.’
Another character that was hinted at in an Easter Egg noticed by eagle-eyed fans was Marvel comic book character DuChamp, aka Jean-Paul ‘Frenchie’ DuChamp, a pilot and mercenary who recruited and befriended Moon Knight, becoming a sidekick to the hero.
However, fans are yet to discover if the character will actually appear in the series, aside from his name being referenced in Marc’s phone.
Crawley actor Shaun previously played DI Chris Deakin in The Bill, as well as starring in football drama Dream Team and soap opera Machair.
Some of his other performances included appearing in comedy series Brass, TV series The River and 2021 historical drama Sardar Udham.
Following the launch of Moon Knight, Jeremy admitted that he became ‘misty’ seeing fans’ reactions online.
‘I actually got a little misty last night watching everyone’s #MoonKnight reactions,’ he tweeted.
‘So glad you guys are loving our little cinnamon roll as much as we do.’
