Whoopi Goldberg tore into bizarre criticism of the Barbie movie, admitting she has been ‘shocked’ by some of the response.
The flick, starring and Ryan Gosling, was finally released in cinemas on Friday after what felt like decades of waiting, throwing us .
Fans decked themselves out in pink as they went to watch the film, , with director Greta Gerwig landing the second biggest box office opening of all time with a whopping $300million in worldwide sales.
Although it has received overwhelmingly positive reviews, some criticized the offering.
Conservative political commentator Ben Shapiro went so far as to actually melt Barbie dolls to protest, branding it ‘one of the most woke movies’, and fuming that it was ‘angry feminist claptrap that alienates men from women.’
Having precisely none of it, Whoopi slammed the criticism during a segment on the View earlier today.
‘It’s a movie! It’s a movie about a doll,’ she said following a video montage of complaints. ‘I thought y’all would be happy, she [Barbie] has no genitalia, so there’s no sex involved. Ken has no genitalia, so he can’t…
‘It’s a doll movie! The kids know it’s colorful and it’s Barbie. They haven’t lived through what the adults have lived through, so when they’re seeing this movie, that’s not how they’re looking at it. The kids are looking at it as a Barbie movie.
‘You guys, I want you all to tell your daughters why you’re not taking them to the Barbie movie. I want you to explain to them what’s wrong with Barbie.
‘It’s a doll movie, guys. I’m shocked that that’s what’s freaking you out these days.’
Whoopi’s colleagues agreed, with Alyssa Farah Griffin joking that she wished she had ‘the time and energy’ to get so ‘worked up over a doll movie.
‘Is there not something more important going on in the world to get super passionate about?’ she continued. ‘It’s fun, Greta Gerwig is brilliant.
‘Also, I’m so taken by some of these right-wing men who have all these thoughts on masculinity. Like, somehow the Barbie movie Is going to make them feel emasculated? No, caring so much about it is honestly the most emasculating thing I could think about.’
Bringing the discussion to an end, Whoopi added: ‘It’s a movie. That’s what we do. We make movies about all kinds of stuff. We make movies about people who fly, we make movies about dolls who talk and walk.
‘They hit two things – they talk about the real world that everybody lives in, and they talk about Barbie world. And they’re two different things.
‘It’s meant to make you just think or pause, it’s not meant to do anything but give you a good time. Go see the movie!’
Margot previously opened up about the message of the film, explaining that it ‘might be feminist’.
The actress leads the star-studded cast as Barbie, alongside Ryan’s Ken and a host of other ‘dolls’, played by Issa Rae, Michael Cera, Emma Mackey and Simi Liu.
‘If you look at Barbie Land from the beginning, the Barbies are on top and the Kens are disregarded, that’s not equal,’ she told ABC.
‘So, whatever the opposite of misogynist is, actually… Towards the end, when they balance things out, then it might be feminist, but actually, it’s beyond feminist.’
