Today’s answer is getting fans angry again, with some complaining that they don’t even know what it means.
Given how much people are always moaning about it, you’d never guess that Wordle was one of the most popular games in the world. But barely a day goes by without fans arguing that an answer is too hard or a word too obscure.
That’s exactly what’s happened with Wordle 290, whose answer we won’t reveal until after the ad below. We will warn though – because Wordle won’t – that two of the letters are the same.
The fact that you can’t tell if a letter is repeated has long been a source of frustration, but the other problem is that people are , even though there’s no evidence that it is.
Many fans are convinced that The New York Times is picking new answers to be as hard as possible, not realising that all the puzzles for the next several years were chosen by the original creator last year.
All The New York Times has done is , as well as ones it thinks are too hard. So, if anything, the game has got easier since they took over, not harder.
That doesn’t mean that today’s puzzle isn’t tricky though, with many players reporting that they only managed to get it on the last try.
The answer for Wordle 290 is NATAL, which is tricky not just because the game doesn’t tell you one of the letters is repeated but because it’s unusual for any English word that short to have two letter ‘A’s.
As for what it means, the word natal refers to anything relating to the place or time of someone’s birth, as in post-natal care.
It also has an alternative use in anatomy, where it means the buttocks – although that’s not something anyone but a medical professional is likely to know.
