Japanese wrestling legend Shinjiro Otani was rushed to hospital after suffering a horror injury over the weekend.
and stars have paid tribute to 49-year-old pioneer, who is ‘conscious’ but unable to ‘move his limbs’ following the terrifying incident.
He was facing Takashi Sugira during the main event of ZERO1’s show on April 10 when he took a German suplex into the corner and the planned move went wrong.
The match was immediately stopped and fans were reportedly asked to leave the venue as he received medical assistance before being rushed to hospital.
In a statement, ZERO1 President Takahito Kami has given an update on Otani’s condition.
He told Tokyo Sports: ‘It hasn’t changed. He’s conscious, but can’t move his limbs. Currently, he’s being treated by a doctor. As for the official diagnosis, we are waiting for a reply from the hospital.’
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, ZERO1 staff haven’t been allowed to visit him in hospital yet, but it’s possible his family will be able to see him on Monday evening.
A number of big names have offered messages of support to Otani as the wrestling world hopes for a recovery.

Natalya shared his comment, and said: ‘I’m keeping Shinjiro Otani in my prayers. A revolutionary talent, an innovator of springboards. I remember when he came to Calgary to train with our coach Tokyo Joe so he could move up to a heavier weight class. So dedicated and so disciplined.’
‘Best wishes go out to Shinjiro Otani for a speedy recovery,’ wrestling veteran Christopher Daniels added, while AEW’s Samoa Joe tweeted: ‘Praying for you this morning my brother. I know your spirit is too strong to be broken.’
Joe’s fellow WWE alumni and said: ‘Best wishes my dear friend.’
And Frankie Kazarian tweeted: ‘Sending strength and love to Shinjiro Otani. Hands down my best matches in Japan all most definitely involved him.’
Otani first debuted in 30 years ago as a young lion in New Japan Pro Wrestling, and became a former IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion as well as two runs with the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Titles, and also held the ZERO1 World Heavyweight Champion.
