superstar Chad Gable scored a major upset on Raw this week but didn’t walk out as Intercontinental Champion.
The Alpha Academy wrestler went into arguably the biggest match of his career on Monday night as the definite underdog against the dominating Ring General, who was yet to lose a singles match since joining the main roster in April 2022.
Gable earned his title shot on Raw earlier this month after overcoming Matt Riddle, Tommaso Ciampa and Ricochet , setting the stage for this showdown.
He was facing an uphill battle from the get-go against the formidable champion, who is edging closer to with the Intercontinental Title.
There was a lot of hype surrounding the match with fans expecting something special, and both GUNTER and Gable delivered by meeting and surpassing the high expectations.
In the end, the underdog even got the win – albeit by countdown – after avoiding a chop on the outside, leaving the champ reeling as his hand collided with the steel post at ringside.
He used that momentum to sent GUNTHER flying with a German Suplex, dumping him into the ringside area before beating the count to get the win – but the champion’s advantage means the championship can only change hands on a pinfall or submission.
The win does set the stage for a rematch – most likely at Payback later this month – which will be after GUNTHER has set the all time record, meaning Gable could and should claim the gold.
Seth Rollins reveals devastating injury, LA Knight costs The Miz against Akira Tozawa and more
The show started with hometown hero Sami Zayn coming out to an incredible ovation from the Quebec City crowd who sang and chanted his name for around 10 minutes without interruption.
Once he was finally able to talk, he got interrupted by The Judgment Day who looked ready to attack before to make the save as they sent them running, setting the stage for a tag match in the main event.
There was plenty of drama even before the bell rang, with Dominik Mysterio, Damian Priest and Finn Balor arguing over who will be involved tonight, while Rhea Ripley told them to figure it out.
In the end, she chose Priest and Balor with the crowd totally pumped for the closing bout of the night, but JD McDonagh soon tried to get involved by throwing the Archer of Infamy’s briefcase into the ring.
KO caught it instead, cracking Balor and getting disqualified before the Judgment Day went on the attack, with Cody Rhodes making the save and turning the match into a six-man.
It was a fantastic trios match was that phase got underway, with the molten crowd cheering for their local lads adding to the emotions as they and Cody picked up a big win.
Earlier in the show, the first match of the night saw The New Day steal a win over Matt Riddle and Drew McIntyre thanks to interference from The Viking Raiders before Drew was even able to tag in.
Erik and Ivar laid out everyone after the bell, setting themselves up for a tag title shot in the near future.
Rhea Ripley scored a dominating win over Candice LeRae this week before Raquel Rodriguez went on the attack and revealed she will challenge for the Women’s World Title at Payback
The Miz trashed the local fans and brought out Akira Tozawa as his opponent, but LA Knight’s appearance distracted the A-Lister and led to a major upset for Tozawa.
Becky Lynch was interrupted by Trish Stratus and Zoey Stark in a segment that unfortunately didn’t hit the right notes.
Chelsea Green and Piper Niven teamed up for the first time with a strong victory for the Women’s Tag Team Champions against Katana Chance and Kayden Carter.
Elsewhere, Shinsuke Nakamura revealed what he told Seth Rollins in Japanese the other week, which was that he knows the World Heavyweight Champion is suffering with a broken back.
The Visionary later admitted he has two fractures in his lumbar spine, and the stage is set for Payback.
WWE Raw airs Monday nights at 1am on TNT Sports 1.
