to on Raw but he got laid out by Tommaso Ciampa.
The supremely talented superstar – who requested his release from Vince McMahon’s company in January – came back into the fold on Monday night, and it looks like his first feud will be with the former NXT Champion.
Ali came out to interrupt a Miz TV segment between host The Miz and the new United States Champion Theory, as the three traded verbal jabs and .
The A-Lister asked if Ali ‘still worked here’, while Theory called him out for ‘taking his ball’ and going home, but the 35-year-old star fired back and laid down a challenge for the US Title.
That didn’t pan out, with Theory instead getting a text from Vince McMahon making a match between the returning star and The Miz.
The pair put on a strong showing, with Mustafa showing no signs of ring rust and getting great reactions from the crowd en route to a big win in his comeback bout.
He made his way up to the ramp celebrating his victory, but Tommaso Ciampa attacked him from behind, laying out Ali and standing over his new rival in a scene reminiscent of his past feud with Johnny Gargano.
The former NXT Champion – now simply known as Ciampa – is a fantastic choice for Ali’s first rivalry now that he’s back on Raw, and it will be fascinating to see how things unfold over the coming weeks.
Asuka returns to confront Becky Lynch, Randy Orton celebrates 20th anniversary with RKO party and more
Mustafa Ali wasn’t the only big return on Raw, with Becky Lynch making her first post-WrestleMania appearance midway through the show – and stepping out on TV without a championship for the first time in three years.
She appeared to be a shell of her former self , insisting she has hit ‘rock bottom’ but the only way is up, insisting she’s at the beginning of a legendary comeback story.
After insisting nobody can stop her, Asuka’s music hit at the Empress of Tomorrow came out to an amazing ovation, with both stars avoiding strikes before Big Time Becks made a quick exit.
At the start of the night, Riddle brought out Randy Orton to as the Viper gave a heartfelt speech surrounded by his fellow superstars, before his former Legacy teammate Cody Rhodes joined RK-Bro in the ring in a very nice moment.
Seth Freakin’ Rollins took exception to the love-in and and insisted the American Nightmare was trying to steal the spotlight, while Ezekiel and Kevin Owens came in to add their feud into the mix, before The Usos came out to trash talk Orton and Riddle before WrestleMania Backlash.
It all broke down with Adam Pearce making a huge eight-man tag for the main event, which was every bit as fun as you’d expect, with every star getting a chance to shine and Orton picking up the win after hitting an RKO on all four opponents.
Earlier in the show, the first match of the night saw Bianca Belair defend her Raw Women’s Title against Sonya Deville, with the bout first getting restarted without count outs, and then disqualifications after the WWE official used a steel chair.
The pair had a fun match the third time the bell rang (even if Carmella and Queen Zelina’s reunion and involvement was baffling), and the EST of WWE was able to retain the gold.
Veer Mahaan destroyed another poor soul, before Omos – flanked by MVP – battled Bobby Lashley in an arm-wrestling contest, which the All Mighty managed to win before the Colossus went on the attack, destroying his opponent with the apparatus.
After R-Truth tried to lead the pairings of Akira Tozawa and Tamina, and Dana Brooke and Reggie through couples’ therapy, he then served as a guest referee in a mixed tag match.
There were flashes of decent action in the very, very short bout, before the usual 24/7 silliness after the bell.
Later, Edge watched on from his throne as Damian Priest – ‘representing Judgement Day’ – earned a win over Finn Balor as the pair sent another message to AJ Styles after their recent attack.
In a nice twist, the Archer of Infamy capitalised on a distraction from Edge and hit a version of his mentor’s Downward Spiral for the win.
WWE Raw airs Monday nights at 1am on BT Sport 1.
