In a statement less than an hour before the show got underway, WWE tweeted: ‘BREAKING: @CodyRhodes suffered a partially torn right pectoral tendonon #WWERaw.’
Speaking on the Hell In A Cell 2022 Kickoff show, host Kayla Braxton added: ‘While weight training in preparation, the tendon tore completely off the bone.’
However, Rhodes is still set for the main event, while fans will be concerned about his short term future in the ring after the bout.
He is yet to address the injury publicly, but he appeared to respond to reports earlier in the day as he shared a photo from the Allstate Arena in Chicago and wrote: ‘You ready Chicago? #HIAC @WWE’
With WWE directly addressing the real life injury, it appears Rhodes has been cleared to wrestle on the show, as there would have been ample time to pull him from the event.
Elsewhere tonight, Bianca Belair is defending her Raw Women’s Championship in the opening match against Becky Lynch and Asuka, while United States Champ Theory puts the gold on the line against Mustafa Ali.
Elias’ younger brother Ezekiel is set to battle Kevin Owens, Bobby Lashley faces MVP and Omos in a two-on-one clash and a bitter No Holds Barred Match pits former friends turned rivals Madcap Moss and Happy Corbin against each other.
And in a huge mixed six-person tag match, The Judgement Day – Edge, Damian Priest and Rhea Ripley – will take on the team of AJ Styles, Finn Balor and Liv Morgan.
