Erik ten Hag has backed transfer target Jurrien Timber to become a future captain for his club.
The new United boss has already begun preparing for life at Old Trafford and is expected to be in attendance for the final game of the season against at Selhurst Park on Sunday.
With as many as 10 players set to leave United this summer, ten Hag is believed to have held extensive talks over transfer targets and has been heavily linked with an immediate reunion with some of his former stars.
20-year-old defender Timber is said to be top of that list. The Dutchman has been a rock at the back for Ajax during another title-winning season and ten Hag believes the youngster is destined to wear the captain’s armband for whichever side he plays for.
Discussing Timber in his final interview as Ajax boss, ten Hag said: ‘He is another great leader that was trained at Ajax.
‘Besides his football skills he has the personality to become a captain.’
Ten Hag has made no secret of his admiration for Timber in recent weeks and insists both he and Ajax teammate Antony, another strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford, are destined to move onto greater things.
‘I think that all top clubs in Europe have Timber in their sights,’ Ten Hag told De Telegraaf.
‘But I think that currently applies to a lot of Ajax players.
‘If Antony were to go, it would be a loss for Ajax, because you have no-one in the current selection who can take over his position. He is top class.’
