Former England striker Alan Shearer has given his reaction to the Three Lions’ group stage draw at the 2022 in Qatar.

Gareth Southgate’s side have been placed in Group B for the tournament alongside the United States of America, the Islamic Republic of Iran and the winner of the European play-off between Wales, Scotland and .

Speaking on the BBC’s coverage of the draw on Friday, Shearer said: ‘Gareth will look at that and think it could have been a lot more difficult than its actually come out. He’ll be happy with that and I’m sure his players will be too.

‘You take what’s given to you. The England players will be full of confidence going into the tournament given what’s happened in the last two and they’ll have a genuine belief that they can do something in this World Cup.’

Capped 63 times by his country, Shearer scored two goals at the 1998 World Cup in France as England were knocked out by Argentina on penalties at the Round of 16 stage.

That was also the last World Cup to feature Scotland, who may yet play their biggest rival England if they are able to overcome Ukraine and then fellow home nation Wales in the European play-off games in June.

‘I have to say I’m pleased that Scotland, Wales or Ukraine got put in England’s group because it just adds that little bit more excitement,’ Shearer added.

‘When you look at Iran and the USA you think okay but if it’s going to be Scotland or Wales then that makes it a bit tougher.’
