Alan Shearer has warned transfer target that he has some big boots to fill if his move to the Etihad goes through.
On Monday it was reported that City had agreed terms with Haaland’s representatives and will trigger the Borussia Dortmund striker’s £63million release clause in the summer.
Arguably the most wanted player in the world right now, the 21-year-old has scored a sensational 82 goals in 85 games for the Bundesliga side since 2020 and has been targeted by multiple top clubs including City, , , Barcelona and Real Madrid.
While City have still excelled without a traditional No.9 in their squad this season, it is believed that signing the Norwegian would make them unstoppable.
Shearer, the Premier League’s all-time record goal scorer is a fan also but warned Haaland that he will have a lot to live up to given the impact that former striker Sergio Aguero left on City.
Speaking at the Premier League Hall of Fame ceremony on Thursday, where Aguero was being inducted, Shearer said: ‘Well, they [City] obviously tried last season to bring in Harry Kane.
‘I would imagine they’re trying to bring in Erling Haaland also. But when you’re trying to fill the boots of a legend who has scored goals all over the world and at critical moments and have been one of the best goal scorers in the world, it’s very difficult.
‘That’s what everyone wants and needs, everyone wants a goal scorer. But by all accounts, they’re supremely confident of getting Haaland in there and I hope they do because he’d be a great addition to the Premier League.’
Over the course of a decade, Aguero won multiple trophies and broke numerous records with City, including becoming the club’s all-time top goal scorer and the highest non-English scorer in Premier League history.
With 260 goals for City by the time of his departure last season, Aguero has set quite the marker for Haaland but it will be a challenge the striker will no doubt relish.
