Ally McCoist fears there is no way back for at with the club’s record singing braced to re-join Inter on loan.
The Belgium international returned to Stamford Bridge last summer in a £97million transfer, desperate to prove his worth after failing to make the grade at the west club earlier in his career.
Lukau was billed as the missing piece in ’s jigsaw but, after an initial bright start, he struggled to fit into his manager’s system and gradually slipped down the pecking order.
The 29-year-old hardly helped endear himself to Tuchel with the controversial interview he gave midway through last season, during which he admitted he missed playing for Inter.
The former Manchester United striker is now set to rejoin the Serie A club on loan having agreed to take a pay cut and McCoist believes he has already played his last game for the Premier League giants.
He told : ‘I think he’s got to go now, I was hoping there would be a way back for him.
‘I think the interview is what’s done him in to be honest with you. I hoped he would’ve stayed and fought for his place and won the fans over and won Thomas Tuchel over with his performances and goals.
‘But I’m not sure, well I’m convinced, that’s not happening now which disappoints me a little bit.
‘I think it’s now in the best interests of both parties that he gets a deal done sooner rather than later and he’s away.
‘I don’t like saying that I just think he shot himself in the foot with the interview. At the time I know how bad it looked and how bad it was, but I kind of hoped that there would be a way back for him but I don’t think there is now.’
