confirmed that twisted his ankle during Newcastle’s epic 4-4 draw with on Saturday, although did not know how serious the injury is.
The wild match finished level, with both sides leading at different stages between Sean Longstaff opening the scoring on seven minutes and Harvey Barnes finishing it on 73.
Gordon started the game but was taken off at half-time as he felt he couldn’t continue, which Howe explained was due to an ankle problem.
‘It looked like he twisted his ankle, I wasn’t sure of the incident,’ said the Magpies boss.
‘I did not necessarily see the incident but he was in a lot of pain at half-time so he had to come off. No idea (how long).
‘He saw enough for him to come off, that was his decision and knew he could not continue. Obviously, we hope it is not bad but we will miss him.’
Barnes was returning from injury himself, making his first Premier League appearance since September as he came off the bench to score.
Callum Wilson also returned from injury to play his first match since December, and Howe admits he is frustrated to get players back only to lose another.
‘It seems like we get one back then lose another one,’ he said.
‘We’ve never been able to get to a point where we feel we’ve got full strength. Today we had Callum and Harvey on the bench then we lose Anthony.
‘I hope that the injury for Anthony is not serious and that Callum and Harvey came through their cameos OK.’
