Manchester United winger admits it ‘hasn’t been an easy season’ but says his performance against Newport County on Sunday is something to build on.

The Brazilian registered his first direct contributions of the season with a goal and assist in a 4-2 win against the League Two outfit.

After a good first season at Old Trafford, Antony has underwhelmed this term.

The 23-year-old’s £85m price tag hasn’t helped matters, while off-the-field accusations against Antony saw him miss the opening stages of the season.

Speaking after the win, Erik ten Hag said he expects Antony to continue the form he showed against Newport.

And the Brazilian says he will continue to ‘close’ himself off in order to improve his displays.

‘I know it hasn’t been an easy season,’ said Antony.

‘We didn’t get the results we wanted as a team, but we never stopped working and focusing on what needed to be done to improve.

‘I fought hard to reach the levels of playing for this club. I know I can build on yesterday’s performance and continue to show my qualities.

‘I pushed myself day after day for better performances. I will continue to completely close myself off to improve and play the football that hired me to do.

‘The whole club, every fan, deserves the best from each one of us.

‘United is one of the main clubs in the world, where everyone wants to be, and it’s where I want to build my story.’
