Zaha’s only spell away from Selhurst Park came a decade ago when he flopped at Manchester United only to be sold back to his boyhood club 18 months later.

Big clubs may have viewed Zaha as a busted flush at that point but the 30-year-old quickly revived his career in south London and enjoyed his best ever season last year, scoring 15 goals.

Zaha’s numbers have dropped off slightly this term but that is perhaps to be expected given Crystal Palace’s struggles in the Premier League.

The Eagles slipped perilously close to the relegation zone before Patrick Vieira’s sacking last month, but have won their last two games under new manager Roy Hodgson to climb 12 points above the drop zone.

Speaking after Palace’s remarkable 5-1 win over Leeds United on Sunday, Hodgson said: ‘This was a good day. They won’t be good days forever.

‘If I was a younger, less cynical person I might be enjoying it more than I am because have an eye that we aren’t clear of the relegation zone. I have to make certain the good things we did today we reproduce.’
