believes this is the best Liverpool team he’s ever seen and insists they are doing everything right in their quest for an historic quadruple.
The Reds took a giant step towards the final by securing a 2-0 win over Villarreal in the first leg of the semis at Anfield on Wednesday night.
Having already won the League Cup this season, ’s men have an final to play next month and are in contention with Manchester City for the Premier League title.
After watching Jordan Henderson and Sadio Mane find the back of the net against Villarreal in a dominate team performance, Manchester United legend Ferdinand only had high praise for the Merseyside outfit.
‘This is the best Liverpool team I’ve ever seen. They’re relentless with and without the ball,’ he said on BT Sport.
‘It’s the way they press teams, the energy, effort, application, you marvel at it.
‘That [the quadruple] has got to be the aim. They are going to set themselves the target. If they achieve it they’re immortal, they are above anyone that has played the game in this country.
‘Whether they can achieve it remains to be seen. But they’re ticking boxes along the way at the moment.’
Liverpool will be heavy favourites to progress to the Champions League final where they’ll face either Manchester City or Real Madrid.
Former Reds striker Michael Owen echoed Ferdinand’s thoughts on Liverpool being the best team he’s seen and believes a quadruple is certainly possible given the way they’re playing at present.
‘Villarreal have just got a pulse. If Liverpool nicked another one it would have been game, set match. If Villarreal get an early goal in Spain you never know,’ Owen said.
‘This was total dominance. It’s the best team I’ve ever seen in a red shirt. They swarm you. Villareal must think “what’s hit us?” It’s impossible to stop this unbelievable press. They’re relentless.
‘Imagine it[the quadruple]. It’s impossible… but now you’re thinking can it happen? The way they’re playing, the belief, you’re thinking can it happen?’
