Bruno Fernandes believes that gave a good account of themselves in the first-half of their 7-0 defeat at Liverpool on Sunday.

United went into the break 1-0 down thanks to ’s opener near the end of a fairly even 45 minutes.

But they completely capitulated in the second-half at Anfield, with Gakpo, (twice), (twice) and Roberto Firmino getting on the scoresheet to achieve the Red’s biggest in ever over their arch-rivals.

Just a week after they lifted the Carabao Cup in style, United looked completely shambolic and Fernandes, who once again wore the armband, received .

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, the attacking midfielder said: ‘It is very frustrating, disappointing, sad because it is a really bad result. We came here with a different mindset before the game.

‘The first half was really good from ourselves, we had a lot of chances. We controlled most of the first half I think, they didn’t create that much.

‘[In the second half] we tried to go forward and score goals and we lost a bit of balance. We gave too much space away against this kind of team. We have to avoid that.

‘The games are coming thick and fast. We had setbacks in the past and we have to come back quickly again. This is what Manchester United are about, we can go down but we have to get back up.’

The result leaves United third in the table, and while qualification for the Champions League still seems like a sure bet, any chance of winning the Premier League title is likely gone.

The Red Devils are 14 points behind leaders Arsenal and nine behind second-placed Manchester City, though they have a game in hand over their rivals.

Erik ten Hag’s side are still in contention to win the FA Cup and Europa League however, and in their next game will host Real Betis in the first-leg of the round of 16 in the latter competition.
