midfielder Christian Eriksen is way ahead of schedule in his return from an ankle ligament injury and could return to the fold for the visit of to Old Trafford a week on Saturday.

There were fears that the Dane would miss the rest of the season after a nasty challenge from Andy Carroll during United’s win against Reading in late January left Eriksen with ankle ligament damage.

Initial results indicated that Eriksen would return for – at best – late April and it was more likely that his comeback would be pushed into May.

That would threaten the Dane’s hopes of featuring in the latter stages of the FA Cup and the .

But his recovery has been smoother than first thought and Eriksen has been in training on the grass during the last five days.

And the Mirror say that the Dane could be back in around ten days time to form part of the squad to take on Everton at Old Trafford.

United face Newcastle United in the north-east on Sunday and the game will come too soon for the Denmark skipper.

But his return is timely as United are without Casemiro for the next three matches, while Marcel Sabitzer is carrying an injury.

A defeat against Newcastle on Sunday would drag Ten Hag’s side back into a top-four race.

The Red Devils have a three-point cushion on the Magpies.
