has hinted he is happy to shoulder the burden of leading ’s forward line this season after his impressive debut against Wrexham.
The Blues began their campaign with a resounding 5-0 win over Wrexham in North Carolina.
Nkunku only joined up with his new teammates last week following long-awaited confirmation of his transfer from RB Leipzing, a deal that was agreed last November.
A versatile forward, Nkunku is capable of playing in a multitude of different positions and started his career as a midfielder at Saint-Germain.
It is a central striker, however, that he is likely to feature prominently for his new club under Mauricio Pochettino and he gave indication of his ability with a smartly taken goal after rounding the goalkeeper.
‘This is my position,’ said Nkunku confidently when asked about his preferred role. I like to play this position to be free to move to get into space. This is my position and I’m very happy.’
He added: ‘We just need adaptation but we are working in training for this. The next week will be very positive and good.
‘He’s (Pochettino) a very good coach. He helps us a lot. We have just started with him and, as I said, the next weeks are [going to be] very positive.
With Kai Havertz having departed as well as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Romelu Lukaku to follow, Mauricio Pochettino will be hoping Nkunku can hit the ground running.
‘I am happy because of the attitude and now is time to improve,’ said Pochettino said in his post-match press conference. It is part of the process to plan the way we want to play and of course be in the physical condition also. I am happy with the performance and we keep going.’
Asked specifically about Nkunku’s performance, he added: ‘The most important thing now is to get good feelings.’
