Four-time winner Clarence Seedorf feels Harry Kane’s future could lie abroad as speculation continues about the captain’s club future.
The prolific striker is entering the final year of his Tottenham deal, with plenty of talk he could make a move, with Spurs getting a hefty fee rather than him leaving for nothing next summer, in a bid to finally win silverware.
And former Ajax, Real Madrid and AC Milan midfielder Seedorf is confident Kane – also wanted by – could star for one of the clubs he played for in an illustrious career which also took in Sampdoria, Inter and 87 Netherland caps.
He also believes the might yet play host to
has one year left on his deal at . Do you think it’s time he moved elsewhere to win trophies?
That a choice Kane needs to make. Tottenham have underperformed but the potential is there. I think they have a long way to go to be successful so I could see him at – why not?
The way Kane plays he is a box player and he can play anywhere. The Spanish league would fit him.
The question is, is he able to adapt as a person in these countries? That’s the question because he can play anywhere but can you adapt to the culture? Are you ready to make these adaptations? Are you determined enough to make it happen?
What would he get from staying at Spurs for the remainder of his career?
We’ve seen many of them – Raul at Real Madrid, ’s Paolo Maldini, Steven Gerrard at Liverpool. He would not be the first. The question is what you want from your career.
Francesco Totti was an amazing player who spent his whole career with Roma. If you stay, stay, but be proud and be happy, make a difference for the team and be the best captain your club has ever had.
When you end your career, be happy with what you have achieved. If he goes to Real or to Germany, he could fit into many clubs but what does he want? Whatever he chooses, that needs to be respected and you wish for him to win something.
Where does loyalty get you in modern football?
I would give my all until the last day for the club I’m representing. Loyalty doesn’t mean you have to stay forever – that’s not how it works.
Very few are fortunate like Maldini, Gerrard and Raul. We will never know how they could have done in other clubs.
Were you surprised Lionel Messi signed for Inter Miami in the MLS rather than go to Saudi Arabia for huge money?
Wherever he goes, for the time he is there, that league will benefit from his presence. I can understand why he wants to be in a Spanish-speaking environment. It’s about where his family feels at home.
And on the money, wherever he goes he will earn these amounts with the commercial deals on top of his club wages.
There will not be a lack of opportunity for him to make money. Maybe business-wise there are things he is doing in America. I just hope he is happy – he has given football so much, it’s correct he makes his money and why not? I’m not judging anybody.
Does this mean we’ll never see him play in England?
Messi can do whatever he wants. If he comes to the Premier League, he will kill it. Six months ago he won the World Cup, he is still as fit as he was in Qatar and now – one or two seasons in the Premier League, why not? Cristiano Ronaldo did it at 36 and
did well.
Karim Benzema signed for Al-Ittihad from Madrid recently. Are Saudi pushing to be one of the game’s biggest destinations now?
There is a bigger point behind these signings. Saudi has always been one of the biggest footballing countries in this region, they are a real footballing country with full stadiums and 50,000 people coming to watch matches. Great players will accelerate the growth of the game there.
There is a very bold vision being implemented – it’s not stopping with Cristiano. They are reinforcing the bigger teams with big names, making the league competitive. I can see where they’re going with this.
