Colombia will take on in the quarter-finals after they beat Jamaica 1-0 in the last 16 on Tuesday in Melbourne.

A tight and feisty affair was decided by a goal from Colombian captain Catalina Usme 51 minutes into the contest.

Her country’s record-scorer extended her tally with a fine first touch and finish after a tremendous in-swinging ball from the left from youngster Ana Guzman.

It was the first time in the tournament that Jamaica had conceded a goal as their stubborn resistance was finally broken by the 33-year-old.

Jamaica’s problem has been scoring goals at this tournament and, although they came close a number of times, it continued to be their issue as they were dumped out of the World Cup.

The Reggae Girlz managed to progress from the group stages by scoring just once and they were kept out once again by a Colombian side that reaches the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time.

There were chances for the Jamaicans, with Jody Brown nodding a header onto the post and Drew Spence heading a great chance wide in the second half.

Colombia also came very close as the final whistle approached, though, again in the air as Leicy Santos placed her free header from close range against the upright.

Usme’s goal proved to be the first and last of the tie and Colombia progress to meet England on Saturday in Sydney, while Jamaica leave only their second ever World Cup with their first win and draws under their belts.

Former England star Eni Aluko told ITV: ‘I think the better team won, in the second half we saw a lot more chance creation for Colombia and they capitalised.’

France and Morocco meet in the final last 16 match on Tuesday, with the winners taking on co-hosts Australia in the last eight.
