’s ‘best’ option if leaves would be a return to , according to his Portugal teammate Jose Fonte.
The 37-year-old has informed United of his desire to leave Old Trafford this summer as he aims to play in the Champions League until he retires.
Ronaldo re-signed for the Red Devils last summer and went on to score 24 goals across all competitions, but the club finished a dismal season down in sixth place.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner is yet to report for United’s training, instead remaining in Portugal for ‘family reasons’.
Chelsea and Bayern Munich are among the potential destinations mooted for Ronaldo, but Fonte feels a move back to the Bernabeu – where he enjoyed so much success – would be ideal.
‘What I do know is that the man loves the Champions League,’ Lille and Portugal defender Fonte told talkSPORT.
‘He believes it is the best competition in the world and knows how he has to perform to win Ballon d’Ors.
‘Talking about Man United, I think they really have a good coach. I’ve played twice against Ajax and I was really impressed with the way they played and their philosophy.
‘He needs to be winning trophies and competing for trophies for the Ballon d’Or.
‘He is a serial winner, as everyone knows. He might be looking at the squad and thinking, “Am I going to be able to win some trophies this year?”
‘Maybe he doesn’t believe it. I don’t know. Only he can say.’
‘Would he go back to Madrid? That would be, for him, the best [option],’ Fonte added.
‘If they want him back or not, that’s a different question.’
