Danny Murphy says he would be ‘amazed’ if did not make any more summer signings after speaking to Old Trafford director John Murtough.

United have spent almost £200m so far this summer to bring England midfielder Mason Mount, Denmark striker Rasmus Hojlund and Cameroon goalkeeper Andre Onana to the Theatre of Dreams.

Murphy believes it is ‘obvious’ that more reinforcements are needed, however, as United look to build on a largely promising first season under .

Murphy spoke to United chief Murtough before the Premier League opener against Wolves on Monday night and says it was ‘intimated’ that more signings were just around the corner.

‘I can tell you that without being 100%, he was intimating to me that there’s more stuff happening. It’s pretty obvious that they need one or two more players in.

‘I would be amazed if they didn’t sign one or two more players after that conversation we had. They definitely need some strength and depth.’

Manchester United rode their luck against Wolves to make a winning start to the new season thanks to Raphael Varane’s second-half goal.

Speaking after the narrow victory, Ten Hag said: ‘It was a tough game. I think we can do much better on the ball.

‘We proved that last season and also in pre-season but the pre-season is not the season and when the league starts opponents are more aggressive.

‘Our decision-making could have been better and we were not aggressive enough from that point of view, but there are a lot of positives to take. We fought for our lives and we survived with three points so well done.’

Manchester United return to action on Saturday against Tottenham, who drew 2-2 with Brentford at the weekend.
