Though United have the option of extending De Gea’s deal by 12 months at any time due to a clause in his contract, they are yet to do so.
That’s because they want De Gea to agree a new deal on reduced terms, as he’s the club’s top earner on £375,000-a-week.
De Gea signed that deal in 2019 but at the age of 32, United are unwilling to hand him the same terms in a new contract that could take him to the age of 36.
United have explored replacements for De Gea, with Diogo Costa and David Raya on the club’s radar.
But say United are close to agreeing a new deal with De Gea that will see his basic salary come down.
However, De Gea could earn more money with performance-based add-ons such as clean sheet bonuses.
It comes following Luke Shaw’s contract extension and United will now switch their attention to tying Diogo Dalot and Marcus Rashford down to new deals.
Dalot is keen on staying United, while there remains work to be done to get a deal for Rashford over the line.
