David Seaman has warned goalkeeper he is ‘under pressure’ following a shaky display during Sunday’s landmark win over .
The Gunners finally ended their 12-game losing streak against the champions thanks to a courageous defensive performance that was capped by Gabriel Martinelli’s late winner.
It could have been a different story, however, had the summer signing from Brentford been punished for several nervy moments in the opening 45 minutes.
The Spain international looked jittery in possession and nearly cost his side a goal when Julian Alvarez blocked one clearance that fell just the wrong side of the post from a City perspective.
Raya did improve after the break, but with Aaron Ramsdale breathing down his neck Seaman insists the 27-year-old must learn to cope with the pressure that comes with playing for a club of Arsenal’s stature.
He told the : ‘You could feel the tension and every time Raya got it the fans were wanting him to get rid of it a bit earlier. He got caught by Foden when he got a block on him and it went the right side of the post for Arsenal.
‘Some of his distribution wasn’t… he needs to tidy that up and he knows that. He is good at that it’s one of his strongest assets.
‘You could feel the tension and every time he held on to it you could the crowd screaming at him to get rid of it. I felt he was under control apart from a couple.
‘There was a cross that came in where he went waving at the crowd but other than that he didn’t have a great deal to do or have a lot of saves to make.
‘He will get better, not only don’t forget he’s come from Brentford and he’s now playing for Arsenal.
‘The pressure and what’s expected of you at Arsenals is a lot different to Brentford. He’s under real pressure. But he’ll learn to cope with it.’
