Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has signed a new contract with the club, saying that he believes the Reds have ‘everything to fight for titles’ in the years to come.
The Portuguese international arrived at Anfield in the summer of 2020 and has become a fan favourite since then thanks to the speed at which he settled into ’s attack and his impressive goalscoring return.
The 25-year-old has scored 34 times in 85 Liverpool appearances in the two years since signing from Wolverhampton Wanderers for around £40m, and has now committed himself to the club with that Liverpool called a ‘long-term’ agreement which is understood to run until 2027.
The former Porto and striker has already won the and Carabao Cup in his time with the club, and was part of the team which reached the UEFA final in May and missed out on the Premier League title by a point to Manchester, and says the belief that Klopp and his staff have shown in him is behind his decision to renew.
‘Well, [I’m] really proud, I have to say,’ Jota told after signing his new contract. ‘Obviously since I arrived two years ago I established myself as an important player in this team – that’s what I wanted from the beginning.
‘Now, signing a new long-term deal, it’s obviously from the club’s perspective proof of the belief in myself as a player. For me, obviously it’s really good to establish I’ll be here for a while. So, the beginning of a new season, let’s do it.’
Furthermore, Jota’s belief that the club will continue to challenge for top honours is one of the things motivating him to continue with the Reds.
‘When you fight for everything, like we did last year, you just want to do it again and to do it better, because it’s possible. That drive is in me and I know it’s in my teammates and all the staff. We have everything to fight for those titles out there.’
Jota missed the Community Shield victory over Manchester City with a hamstring injury aggravated during Liverpool’s pre-season tour of Thailand Singapore, and is set to miss the start of the Premier League campaign.
‘Unfortunately for me I had an upset in this pre-season because I got injured [in the] last game of the season playing with Portugal,’ he explained. ‘So I was coming back in this pre-season, I felt it a little bit again. So it will be a few more weeks, I would say.’
Liverpool will begin their 2022/23 Premier League campaign away at Fulham on Saturday 6 August at 12:30.
