Edinson Cavani has agreed to join Villarreal on a free transfer this summer, although the club must sell before they can bring in the veteran striker.

The 35-year-old left at the end of last season when his contract came to an end, and had no intention of retiring, instead looking to continue playing at the top level.

His former manager at Paris Saint-Germain, , has moved to reunite with the Uruguayan and a deal to take him to Villarreal is close.

Spanish publication report that Cavani has agreed the switch to La Liga, but the Yellow Submarine must do some more business before getting hold of the iconic forward.

, and the Marca report states that Paco Alcacer is likely to be the one on the way out.

The 28-year-old’s career has gone off the boil somewhat after becoming a star with Valencia, Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund and Spain.

His move to Villarreal in 2020 has been disappointing, scoring just one La Liga goal last season and the Spanish side are trying to move him on, with Celta Vigo interested.

Cavani will have other options if Villarreal cannot make the move work, having already come close to joining Turkish side Fenerbahce this summer.

The former Napoli and PSG striker had a disappointing season last time around with the Red Devils, scoring just two goals in 20 appearances in all competitions.

A move to Spain would be his first crack at La Liga, having played in Uruguay, Italy, France and England in his career so far.
