Emmanuel Petit says Chelsea’s move for striker is a ‘panic buy’.
The Blues are light on options up front after the loan exit of earlier in the transfer window.
is eyeing a reunion with Aubameyang, who he worked with during his time at Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund.
Reports have suggested an agreement between Barca and Chelsea for the 33-year-old may be imminent over a total package worth €25million (£21m).
Aubameyang only joined the Catalan club in early February on a free transfer after agreeing a mutual termination of his contract with Arsenal.
The striker has scored 13 goals in 24 appearances for Barca, but he faces increased competition following the arrival of Robert Lewandowski in the summer.
Although he is a regular goalscorer, Petit thinks it’s a ‘gamble’ for Chelsea to bring in Aubameyang.
‘Auba looks more a panic buy than something the club have been thinking about for months,’ the former Chelsea and Arsenal star told .
‘The transfer market is ending in a few days and Chelsea are in a panic.
‘They want to buy defenders, strikers, but they just don’t know what they want.’
‘I don’t see the real qualities behind it, the projection in the future,’ Petit added.
‘If you want to spend so much on a player, you need to have a vision, but I don’t see that coming from Chelsea.
‘It’s a gamble. He can score goals but he has to be fit physically and be good in his mind.’
