Shaw briefly returned to first-team training ahead of with manager suggesting he was in consideration to come off the bench that night.
He remained an unused substitute that night in Gelsenkirchen however and was left out of the squad completely for
Shaw trained away from the squad earlier this week and was absent once again as the group got back to work on the training pitch on Friday morning.
It will raise further concerns over whether the 28-year-old will have any role to play in Germany this month, with England back in action against Slovenia on Tuesday evening.
In Shaw’s absence, England are without a recognised left-back with Kieran Trippier filling that void in the first two games. Joe Gomez, frequently deployed in that role for Liverpool last season, has not played a minute of England’s European Championship campaign thus far.
England’s lack of width down the left was a concern with Shaw’s presence down that flank instrumental for club and country when he is fit.
The former Southampton youngster has been working on an individual training programme to get him up to speed.
‘These are the decisions we have to make, not just tomorrow but whenever we play,’ Southgate said this week after confirming Shaw would not be involved against Denmark.
‘We have to decide what the right physical level for group is and what it is for individual players. Without a doubt, players will benefit from having the game. We have to balance to stick with what we did or to change and refresh the team.
He’s actually on track for where we thought he would be originally. We were hoping a couple of days ago he might accelerate that bit but he needs a bit more volume work.
‘He didn’t train with group today because there are days when he needs to do more than the rest of the group and days when he needs to recover when the others are pushing. He is still in and out from the others but operating on his own programme as well.’
