believes will be back to their best under next season.

Chelsea endured their worst and most embarrassing season for many, many years in 2022/23 after finishing 12th in the – a whopping 54 points behind champions Manchester City.

This was the first campaign under the ownership of Todd Boehly and it was even more chaotic than many had predicted, with the American sacking Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter and spending around £600million on transfers that did little to improve the mood at Stamford Bridge.

The most expensive signing was the January deadline day arrival of Fernandez whose £106.8m fee broke the British transfer record and made him the fifth most expensive player of all-time.

Before the move, the midfielder was enjoying a great season with Benfica who he had only joined six months prior, registering four goals and seven assists, with the Portuguese club eventually winning the Primeira Liga title.

Over the winter, the 22-year-old rose to fame as a key player in Argentina’s World Cup winning campaign in Qatar, with Fernandez picking up the tournament’s Young Player award.

His time in west London has been far less successful however. as despite some bright moments he was unable to prevent Chelsea’s plight and could only muster two assists in 22 games.

The Blues are undergoing much change this summer with plenty of outgoings and incomings expected alongside the appointment of Pochettino, and Fernandez appears to have thrown his support behind his fellow Argentine, saying he wants only the best for the club.

Reflecting on the season, he posted on Instagram: ‘Already enjoying the holidays with my family I can make a brief review of this wonderful year. First of all the family is getting bigger!

‘I lived brilliants moments in just one year. Very grateful to play for Benfica and I take the opportunity to congratulate all the Benfiquistas for the title!!

‘Then it was time to touch the skies with the hands having the opportunity to play in a World Cup for my country Argentina and a childhood dream became true by winning this such desired tittle.

‘I still had half a year and there was an opportunity to reach one more dream, to play the Premiere League and fight for Chelsea! Happy and more than happy with everything we have experienced this year.

‘We are moving forward with the national team. We are moving forward with Chelsea that although the first semester was not as we all wanted, we know that this is a serious project and with people who are looking for the best for the club and this year we will show it!!

‘Let’s go for more!! The best is yet to come!’

Fernandez, Pochettino and Chelsea face a difficult start to the 2023/24 season with a home fixture against Liverpool on 13th August.
